Aamer A. Sarfraz is a serial entrepreneur and investor. He is founder of several companies, managed through Indus Basin Holding (www.indusbasin.com). Aamer is founder of:
– Rice Partners Ltd, a venture-backed impact business that works with rural smallhold rice farmers in South Asia to increase yields and incomes. In close partnership with Mars Food (www.mars.com), Rice Partners has proven how an impact investment can be both profitable and meaningful. According to the International Rice Research Institute, its contract farming program is the only one of its kind in Asia.
– United Guar LLC (www.unitedguar.com), a producer of guar polymers in Houston, Texas with operations in Oklahoma and South Asia. United Guar’s products are used to make hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) fluids in the oil & gas industry. The company is backed by over a dozen leading venture investors from the US, the Middle East and China. It is revitalising guar farming in the southwest US.
– Oakwood Royalty Capital, an investment firm which provides businesses in Europe with entrepreneur-friendly growth capital. Oakwood Royalty Capital invests in businesses in return for a small stake in their future revenues, providing an alternative to traditional private equity.
– United Completion Products, an oilfield chemicals company based in London, which provides specialized oilfield chemicals and services.
Indus Basin Holding also co-manages a frontier markets private equity fund for SME’s in Pakistan (The Catalyst Fund).
Aamer started his career working in The Electrum Group in London (previously Tigris Financial Group) for 8 years. The Electrum Group is one of the most successful private investors in natural resources worldwide, particularly in gold and precious metals mining, with over $1billion of its own capital deployed. At The Electrum Group, Aamer built strategic partnerships across the Middle East & Asia, launched ventures in new countries, and helped to build the largest privately-held gold exploration portfolio in the world. Aamer also worked at private equity firms 3i venture capital and Ithmar Capital.
He holds an MSc (with Distinction) in Information Systems from the London School of Economics & Political Science, and a BSBA in Management from Boston University. He has visited over 60 countries, and lives with his wife in London and Houston.
Dr. Lewis Norman is a veteran oil & gas industry technical expert, with 40 years of experience.
Dr. Norman served in a number of roles at Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) from 1976 – 2013. Most recently, he was appointed Halliburton Fellow, the company’s highest and most prestigious technical position. Over his career at Halliburton, he directed and executed scientific research, and applied theories and principles to develop and improve products, processes and methodologies. He holds 81 US patents, has published 45 academic papers, and is considered an industry expert the use of guar gum in oil & gas. He has been a keynote speaker at over a dozen industry events.
Dr. Norman has served as Executive Board Member on the Chevron Texaco JIP on Gas Hydrates, Chairman of the Industrial Advisory Board NSF Center for Surfactants at Columbia University, Board Member on the Industrial Advisory Board at the University of Houston, Member of the Crisman Institute Centre from Unconventional Resources at Texas A&M University.
He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Texas Tech University and completed his post doctoral fellowship at Rice University.
Malachi Boyuls is managing partner of St. Augustine Capital Partners, a Texas-based, investment and advisory partnership focused on energy and infrastructure opportunities. Prior to joining St. Augustine Capital Partners, Malachi Boyuls was an attorney in Dallas at Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher LLP, where he practiced in the firm’s regulatory groups, including antitrust, energy, and securities. He graduated from New York University School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Annual Survey of American Law. During law school, Malachi worked for then-Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., now a Supreme Court Justice. Following graduation, he clerked for Federal District Court Judge David C. Godbey in Dallas and Federal Appeals Court Judge Harris L Hartz in Albuquerque, N.M. Malachi, along with his wife Shelby, are both active in the state and community, and are the parents of two young children.
Ali has had a wide ranging business career, including venture capital and private equity (he was senior partner at 3i groups London headquarters), oil and gas (founding member of Leor Energy; also board member of Neos Geosolutions Inc.), precious metals mining (global leadership team and director of the Electrum Group) as well as sitting on various boards and investment committees.
He is also a board member of Panthera in the UK, one of the world’s largest wildcat conservation groups. He holds a B.A. and M.A. (Honors) from Oxford University where he studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics as well as an MBA from the London Business School. He is also a Fellow of the Kauffman Foundation for Venture Capital, and the founder of the Cogito Scholarship Foundation.
